Jordan, one of the Middle East's friendliest and easiest countries to travel in. My Jordan tours are different from others' in that I drive us from city to city and site to site. I hire a SUV or a van (dependent on numbers) which gives us the flexibility to depart and arrive when it suits, to get to locations others can't, and to stop when a scene shows itself. This is a fabulous way to explore Jordan, it's a small country which means distances between the places that we visit are just a couple of hours. I am an excellent driver who has driven in many countries including on several trips to Jordan. This tour also includes a visit to Iraq. A country that I have been to many times. It's a real favorite and before you ask, is it safe? Yes, indeed it is. Please don't let the media and travel advice put you off. Iraq is the Cradle of Civilization and is a place I can't help returning to each and every year. A week in Jordan and 5 days in Iraq and you'll have so many great memories along with photos that others won't have, and that alone is a great thrill for the composition hungry photographer. I know, because I am one of you! Once again Susan offers affordable tours that are not only photography-focussed, but that are also exciting for partners and phone photographers.

The trip commences in Amman, an early arrival is recommended. We’ll make our way to our 5 star Dead Sea Resort and spend the afternoon soaking in the Dead Sea and utilizing the hotel’s supplied mud, so rejuvenating after a flight. A slow morning for those who may have had no choice but to arrive late before we head to the nearby village of Madaba. Madaba is home to the art of mosaics. We visit St Georges Church where the oldest mosaic map in the world can be seen on the church’s floor. We’ll also visit Mt Nebo from where you can look across to the Holy Land of Israel. The following day we drive to Petra, so many photographic points en route; after check-in we’ll head down to the world famous site and photograph the Treasury (Khazneh) in the beautiful soft light of the afternoon. We’ll direct a camel and a Bedouin for your best photographic compositions. Late afternoon is a great time to visit – we are entering when others are leaving! Then the next day we’ll visit Petra once again, but we’ll go early right at opening. We’ll head towards the Monastery (it’s a challenging walk of 800 stairs) and arrive there before the crowds. If you’re not eager for the climb, you can spend time photographing the amphitheater and other sections of Petra that I will point out. We’ll also avail the services of a local Bedouin here for some portraiture. The following day we’re off to Wadi Rum. Unlike many other tours, we will actually stay inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area, here our accommodation will be tented with share bathrooms. We’ll enjoy a jeep tour and a sunset Bedouin tea in a spectacular part of the desert. This is your chance for some astro-photography. We’ll set up our tripods and wait with some hot tea in hand. After a thrilling night in the desert, we head back to Amman, the afternoon is reserved for some free time before we meet for dinner. Next up is Jerash, we take a day tour to this incredibly preserved Roman city north of Amman. Returning to the capital in the afternoon. We’ll photograph the Temple of Hercules from the Citadel above the city at sunset before we pack up and get ready to fly to Baghdad tomorrow!!
Hello Iraq, an incredible country full of welcoming and friendly people, and some of the best food you’ve ever tasted! Your perception of Iraq will be shattered I guarantee it! Tonight we’ll visit Mutanabbi Street, the most famous area in all Baghdad. Then tomorrow we’ll go on a city-wide tour visiting sights such as, Tahrir Square, Martyr’s Monument, Saving Iraqi Culture Statue, Khulafa Mosque built during the Mongol occupation, and Saddam’s Crossed-Swords Monument. And we’ll finish the day with an evening visit to Kadhimya walking street. The following day we head out of Baghdad to Babylon and Karbala where we’ll spend the night. The shrines at Karbala are spectacular and a must visit for anyone coming to Iraq. Finally, we return to Baghdad for the last 2 nights when we’ll explore this city more deeply. Note – departure is from Baghdad.
