Why Winter in Yellowstone?

Yellowstone in winter is unlike anywhere else in the Lower 48. Fewer visitors. Deeper snow. More dramatic light. And wildlife that must move, hunt, and survive—creating extraordinary photographic moments.

You’ll experience:

Snow-covered landscapes shaped by light and weather

Steam-filled geyser basins glowing at sunrise

Bison, elk, foxes, coyotes—and the possibility of wolves

A pace slow enough to wait for moments, not rush past them

Who Is This Workshop For?

Whether you’re just picking up a camera for the first time or you’ve been shooting for years, this trip welcomes photographers of every skill level. We’ll meet you where you are—answering questions in the field and sharing techniques in real-world settings. When we’re not out capturing the moment, we’ll take time back at the hotel to dive into post-processing tips and editing workflows, helping you refine your images no matter your experience.

Pre-Workshop Classes

Pre-workshop classes will be offered to help participants feel confident and prepared before heading into the field. This tour is ideal for beginning to intermediate photographers, and birders are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.

Loaner Gear

Canon DSLR cameras and lenses—including Sigma 100–400mm and Sigma 60–600mm—will be available, with mirrorless adapters if needed.

Transportation Designed for Photographers

This tour is intentionally structured to give you maximum access and flexibility.

Day 1 – Arrive in Bozeman

Please plan to arrive in Bozeman (BZN) by 12:00 PM (noon). We are only able to make one group transfer from the airport to Gardiner, where the tour officially begins. Earlier arrivals are encouraged—around 11:00 AM is ideal.

Winter travel can be unpredictable, and delays do happen. For peace of mind, we strongly recommend arriving the day before your tour begins. Jeff and I will be in the area two days prior to the tour and are happy to recommend a nearby hotel if you’d like to come in early.

If you miss the group transfer, private shuttle services are available from Bozeman to Gardiner at an additional cost.

Days 2 & 3 — Private Snowcoach

We travel deep into Yellowstone’s winter interior aboard a private snowcoach, reaching areas completely inaccessible by regular vehicles.

✔ Warm, comfortable travel

✔ Frequent stops at photographer-selected locations

✔ Steam, snow, geysers, and winter wildlife

Remaining Days — Private All-Wheel-Drive Van

For wildlife-focused days, we switch to a private AWD photography van, giving us the freedom to respond instantly to wildlife and light.

✔ Quick stops

✔ Easy repositioning

✔ Longer time with active animals

The Adventure — Sample Itinerary

Weather can change, but we do our very best to stick to it.

(Same structure for both February tours)

Day 1 — Arrival & Orientation

Arrive in Bozeman, Montana (BZN) by midday. We’ll travel together to our lodging near Yellowstone’s northern entrance.

That evening, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation, covering the following:

Winter photography strategies

Wildlife etiquette and safety

Gear tips for cold conditions

You’ll head to bed knowing tomorrow begins the real adventure.

Day 2—Deep Winter Yellowstone (Private Snowcoach)

Today we go where few winter visitors ever reach.

A private snowcoach takes us into Yellowstone’s frozen interior—a world of geysers steaming through snowfields and forests locked in ice. We stop often, waiting for light, atmosphere, and moments worth capturing.

Expect surreal landscapes, dramatic steam, and wildlife encounters along remote corridors.

Day 3 — Steam, Snow & Silence (Private Snowcoach)

Another full day in the snowcoach, refining compositions and slowing down even more.

This is where patience pays off:

Soft winter light filtering through steam

Frost-covered trees glowing at sunrise

Quiet moments most photographers never experience

This is Yellowstone at its most haunting and beautiful.

Days 4–6 — Wildlife on the Move (Private AWD Van)

Now the focus shifts to Yellowstone’s legendary wildlife.

Traveling by private AWD van, we work wildlife corridors and valleys, responding to conditions as they unfold. Early mornings, long lenses, and quiet anticipation define these days.

Photographic opportunities may include:

Bison plowing through deep snow

Elk moving through frozen valleys

Coyotes and foxes hunting

Birds of prey riding winter winds

These are immersive days—when you forget the cold and stay focused on the moment.

Day 7 — One Last Frame

We’ll head out for one final sunrise session before breakfast. Afterward, we depart for Bozeman Airport (BZN) for a flight departure scheduled for after 11:30 AM.

You’ll leave with memory cards full of memories, new skills, and the feeling that you truly experienced Yellowstone in winter.

Photography Instruction

This is a photographer-led experience, not a rigid tour.

You’ll receive guidance on:

Manual exposure in snow
