Join Jeff and Angie for a rare wildlife photography adventure in the remote tundra of Nome, Alaska. Fall is one of the best times to photograph musk ox as they roam the open tundra surrounded by autumn color and dramatic northern light. This small-group workshop focuses on finding and photographing these incredible Ice Age survivors in one of the wildest places in North America.
We have a total of three openings for a fall muskox in autumn tundra colors. Add to cart and pay the $1,500 deposit; the balance will be billed 45 days before departure, but you can pay anytime before that as well.

For five unforgettable days, we’ll explore the wild beauty of Nome at peak fall color. A fresh palette of reds, golds, and fiery oranges emerges every morning, beckoning for photographic capture. Experienced guides will help you find the right place at the right time, giving you every opportunity to capture dramatic muskox moments and breathtaking fall scenery.
This month marks the rutting season, providing an opportunity to witness powerful head-to-head clashes and the primal energy of muskox in their natural habitat. Your camera becomes your storyteller as you freeze those raw, wild moments.
But the magic doesn’t stop with muskox. Nome is a treasure chest of photographic opportunities—migratory birds, sweeping vistas, moody coastal scenes, unique wildlife, and that dreamy Alaskan autumn light that makes everything look painterly.
We keep this workshop intentionally small so you get personal guidance, space to breathe, and room to create. This remote, wild, intimate, and absolutely unforgettable experience will transform your portfolio and rekindle your love for photography.

Here Is Some Information About the Musk Ox of Alaska
The musk ox (Ovibos moschatus) is a stocky, long-haired animal with a slight shoulder hump and a very short tail. They have long guard hair that hangs nearly to the ground and looks like a skirt. Both male and female musk oxen have horns, but the horns of bulls are larger and heavier than those of cows. The horns of bulls develop large bases that nearly span the entire forehead.
The coat consists of a long, coarse outer layer and a short, fine underhair. The underhair is collected by the locals and sold by the ounce for raw material at $45 per ounce. Coloration of the Greenland muskox, the race found in Alaska, is generally dark brown with creamy-colored hair on the “saddle,” forehead, and legs.
Musk oxen have cloven hooves, all four of which are the same size. Their Greenlandic name, Umimmak, means long-bearded ox. What makes them so unique is their long, brown, shaggy coats. Contributing to the bulk, their fur is actually double-layered for insulation against the cold.
Mature bulls are about 5 feet high at the shoulders and weigh between 600–800 pounds. Cows are smaller, averaging approximately 4 feet in height and weighing 400–500 pounds.
A female musk ox will carry her calf for around eight months. The calf can run with the herd a few hours after birth.
Musk oxen are closely related to goats. They are both members of the Bovidae family, which also includes sheep, cattle, bison, and antelopes. However, muskoxen are more closely related to goats and sheep than they are to cows or bison.
Nome is also a birding paradise and offers guests chances to see grizzly bears, wolverines, wolves, reindeer/caribou, foxes, and many other smaller species.
If the weather is favorable, we’ll do our best to help you take pictures of the aurora borealis. There are a few locations that can produce incredible images.

Since there is a massive area to cover daily, we will spend a significant portion of the trip in an SUV or van, stopping for photographic opportunities that may require some hiking in the tundra.
Who Is This Workshop For?
Whether you’re just picking up a camera for the first time or you’ve been shooting for years, this trip welcomes photographers of every skill level. We’ll meet you where you are—answering questions in the field and sharing techniques in real-world settings. When we’re not out capturing the moment, we’ll take time back at the hotel to dive into post-processing tips and editing workflows, helping you refine your images no matter your experience.
Pre-Workshop Classes
We’ll be offering pre-workshop classes to all participants to help them feel confident and prepared before embarking on our big adventure. We’ll schedule a Zoom meeting to discuss the setup and provide some tips for photographing before we leave.
This tour is suitable for both beginner and intermediate photographers, and birders are welcome. There’s no prior experience required.
Loaner Gear
Canon DSLR cameras and lenses—including Sigma 100–400mm and Sigma 60–600mm—will be available, with mirrorless adapters if needed.

September 3rd — Arrive in Nome, Alaska
Settle into your cozy accommodations. Take a moment to unwind, breathe in that crisp Arctic air, and get ready for the adventure ahead.
As evening approaches, we’ll head out for our first photography session—chasing that soft Arctic twilight glow that makes everything feel magical.
We’ll wrap up the night with dinner at a local restaurant and a rundown of the days ahead.
September 4th–6th — Fall Color & Muskox: Alaska’s Wildest Show
Muskox in peak fall color. Need we say more?
These three days are the heart of our adventure.
We’ll start early each morning with a quick breakfast (or bring it along for the ride) before heading straight into muskox country for that golden morning light.
Throughout the day, we’ll explore different directions around Nome, locating various herds and keeping an eye out for other wildlife—willow ptarmigan, red fox, moose, caribou, bears, migratory birds, and whatever surprises the tundra gifts us.
Lunch will be provided in the field so we never miss a moment.
Each day brings new scenery, new wildlife encounters, and new creative opportunities as we cover diverse terrain with those rich fall colors glowing all around us.
We’ll return to Nome each evening after sunset—tired, exhilarated, and with memory cards full of magic.
We will also be ready for dinner at the local restaurant.
September 7th — Final Morning with the Muskox
On our last morning together, we’ll venture out early for one more opportunity to photograph these remarkable animals.
It’s your chance to capture those final, unforgettable frames before we say goodbye to Nome and close out this incredible Alaskan adventure.

Deposit & Cancellation Policy
At Jeff & Angie Photography, many of our workshops include arrangements such as lodging, transportation, permits, park access, boats, guides, and other services that require significant non-refundable commitments well in advance. Because of this, deposits are necessary to secure your spot.
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for every workshop to protect your investment.
Deposit Schedule
A $2,000.00 deposit is due at the time of booking, unless other arrangements have been approved.
100% of the total workshop cost is due 120 days before the workshop’s start date.
Cancellations
If an unexpected situation arises and you need to cancel, we will do everything possible to help fill your spot.
If we are able to replace you, we will refund the amount received from the new participant (up to what you have paid).
If we are unable to fill your spot, all deposits and payments are non-refundable and non-transferable due to the advance commitments required for these trips.
Because life happens and nature is unpredictable, we strongly encourage all participants to carry travel insurance.
