A Black & White Photo Workshop: Behind the Lens

Avatar Photo of Jennifer King Photo Workshops

Have you wanted to explore black-and-white photography or take your existing work to a more creative level? For seven years, I have led black-and-white workshops in remarkable locations around the world, helping photographers develop a stronger artistic vision and create inspiring results. In 2027, we return to Death Valley National Park, where the diverse landscape provides an ideal environment for learning to see beyond color. Black-and-white photography is more than converting a color image or using a filter to rescue a photograph that is not working. It begins in the field—with the intention of creating in black and white. You will learn how to photograph the light, recognize the tones, textures, shapes, and contrasts that create compelling images, and bring your vision to life through thoughtful processing techniques. This immersive workshop is creative, challenging, fun, and deeply rewarding.

The Craft, Vision and Process Behind Black & White Photography

Have you wanted to expand into Black & White Photography? Maybe you have done a little, and really want to take your photography to the next level. I have conducted Black & White focused workshops for 7 years at different locations across the word, and the results that photographers see in their work, is inspiring. For 2027, we will return to Death Valley NP to host our BW Workshop, which has an incredibly diverse landscape for learning.

Black & White photography is more than just converting an image to BW or using a filter to enhance an image that is not working in color. These thoughts come from the digital age, have been taught to us over recent years, and are simply outdated.

Approaching your subject with the intent to create a work of art by photographing in Black & White is what you will learn. I will teach you, behind the lens, how to photograph by the light, what to look for in the landscape and nature that can make a compelling image, and work with you intensely on bringing your images to life with processing techniques. This intense, creative workshop is fun, challenging and rewarding. Hope to see you there!

I still remember what it was like to learn photography, and I remember the struggles. Why is an f-stop also called aperture? Why is exposure time also your shutter speed? Interchangeable words for the same photographic term can be confusing, not to mention frustrating when all you want to do is become a good photographer. I am sensitive to this and the insecurity it creates in your photographic journey. I’ve spent years refining how I teach photography—making both the technical and creative aspects easier to understand while creating a supportive environment where photographers can learn, experiment, and grow.

For more than 14 years, I have photographed and taught in landscapes I know intimately. Knowing these locations allows me to do more than guide you to a beautiful view. I can help you anticipate the light, recognize creative possibilities, and slow down long enough to make thoughtful photographs that feel like your own.

Since 1994, I have worked as an art director, creative director, and director of photography. These roles taught me how ideas develop, how individual elements come together to strengthen an image, and how to guide someone toward a creative solution without taking away their own voice. That experience continues to shape the way I teach today. I don’t want to tell you what to photograph—I want to help you recognize what draws you to a scene and express it in a way that feels personal to you.
